Tengrinews.kz — President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has awarded Kazakh UFC fighter Shavkat Rakhmonov the Order of “Barys” II degree, according to Akorda.
At the ceremonial event dedicated to Republic Day, the Head of State honored the renowned Kazakh athlete, who competes in the UFC welterweight division.
“The Order of Barys II degree is awarded to the celebrated athlete Shavkat Rakhmonov for his great contribution to promoting an objective image of our country and representing Kazakhstan abroad,” — Tokayev said.
The significance of the “Barys” Order
The Order of Barys is one of Kazakhstan’s highest state honors, established in 1999. It is awarded for exceptional service to the state and the people of Kazakhstan — including achievements in strengthening sovereignty, advancing the economy, science, culture, and sports, as well as for outstanding public or international contributions.
There are three degrees of the award:
- I degree – the highest, for exceptional merit;
- II degree – for significant achievements;
- III degree – for distinguished service in various fields.
The order may be awarded to citizens of Kazakhstan, as well as to foreign nationals or stateless persons who have made notable contributions to the country’s development or to strengthening international relations.

Among other athletes who have received different degrees of the Barys Order are Alexander Vinokurov (cycling), Olga Rypakova (athletics), Zhakslyk Ushkempirov (wrestling), Aleksey Ni (weightlifting), Ilya Ilyin (weightlifting), and Bibisara Assaubayeva (chess).
