The former middleweight champion Saul Canelo Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 КО), 24, has accepted Gennady Golovkin’s (33-0, 20 КО) challenge to fight but was not impressed with GGG’s victory over Monroe, Tengrinews reports citing Vesti.kz.
Golovkin KOed Willie Monroe Jr. in the 6th round at The Forum before over 12 thousand people on May 16. After the fight, Golovkin challenged Alvrez and Miguel Cotto.
Golovkin didn't have to wait long for an answer. The Mexican tweeted his agreement to fight.
“#TeamCanelo. Hell Yeah!” Alvarez tweeted.
“When I move up to 160 pounds, I will face the best in the weight division. Humbly and respectfully, I do not see real competition there. Greetings to all!” Alvarez who seemed unfazed by GGG’s performance at The Forum tweeted later.
Earlier, the Mexican knocked out James Kirkland in the third round. Alvarez could be facing Miguel Cotto in Fall, if the Puerto Rican wins his fight against the Australian Daniel Geale.
“The thing is, if (Canelo) fights Cotto and beats Cotto (then we are the mandatory), so the fight will have to be at 160. We’re not doing a catch-weight – it’s a 160-pound title. If he chooses to give it up, then we’ll fight someone else for the title. We’re not going down to 154 for Canelo,” Golovkin’s trainer Abel Sanchez said via BoxingScene.com
Since, Canelo is not willing to move up to 160-pounds soon and Golovkin won’t go down 154-pounds, the fight won’t probably happen this year.
