Gennady Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler does not see a fight against Peter Quillin as interesting anymore, Tengrinews reports citing Vesti.kz.
Quillin announced vacating the WBO championship title. This would mean that Quillin will forgo $1.4 million the highest sum in his career and refuse to fight against Matt Korobov.
“Now you can see the difficulty we had getting a unification fight with Quillin. We reached out to Quillin's team and could never get an answer. (…) But Quillin's value to us was as a champion. Without a belt, there's not a lot of value there for us," Loeffler said.
Earlier, a fight between Golovkin and Quillin was named as one of the most anticipated. For Golovkin, who had trouble finding an opponent it would mean that settling middleweight titles unification bouts would be even harder.
On October 18, Golovkin will face Marco Antonio Rubio in a unification fight in Los Angeles.
