WBA (Super), IBO and WBC (interim) middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin has to wait for one year for a WBC middleweight title fight, Tengrinews reports.

Golovkin defeated Marco Antonio Rubio in the middleweight title unifying fight in California. The Kazakhstani undefeated boxer defended his titles and won the interim WBC title on October 19.

But to fight for the fully-fledged WBC title, Golovkin has to face Miguele Cotto who is the present holder of the WBC title in the middleweight category.

GGG has on numerous occasions expressed his desire to face the Puerto Rican boxer. "I want to fight against Miguel Cotto next. He is a great champion," Golovkin said after the fight against Rubio. However, Cotto’s promoter Bob Arum doubted Golovkin’s “ability on pay-per-view”.

Cotto, meanwhile, was given an opportunity to defend his WBC title on voluntary basis. This allows Cotto to have another title defense fight before facing Golovkin. Cotto could possibly fight against a Mexican boxer Saul Alvarez before GGG.

Cotto’s last fight took place on June 7 when he faced Sergio Martinez. The Puerto Rican boxer TKOed Martinez in the 9th round.

Golovkin was named among the Top 5 undefeated boxers in the world by Bleacher Report. His next fight is scheduled to February 2015 in Monaco.
