Golovkin family tragedy: fight cancelled

After cancelling the April 26th fight against Andy Lee, Gennady Golovkin is back to Kazakhstan to mourn his father’s death. With everything put on hold for the time being there is no exact information on Golovkin’s next fight. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., 28 might be Golovkin’s next opponent on July 12, Tengrinews reports citing Yahoo Sports. Golovkin’s father died on February 18th from a sudden heart attack. There is a traditional 40-day mourning period and the boxer is back home to spend the time with his family. Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler says that Gennady is not thinking about boxing at the moment and his family is his priority now. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (42-1, 32 KO) won his rematch against Bryan Vera (23-8, 4 KO) on March 1 in a super middleweight category. The Mexican boxer announced that he wants to fight Golovkin next. Chavez’s promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank met with Loeffler to discuss detains of the possible fight between Golovkin and Chavez. But with the family tragedy, it might take some time before Golovkin is get back in the ring.
