The most anticipated Golovkin-Chavez fight has been cancelled, Tengrinews reports citing Vesti.kz.
Bob Arum of Top Rank said that the negotiations were over and both boxers were looking for other opportunities. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (48-1-1, 32 КО) despite his interest in fighting Gennady Golovkin (29-0, 26 КО) of Kazakhstan on July 19th in Los Angeles asked for the money Top Tank could not pay.
“He wanted to fight Golovkin, I think, but on crazy terms and all that sort of stuff. So we can’t do the Golovkin fight now, but maybe down the road we can do it,” Arum told BoxingScene.com.
Chavez is looking into working with an influential adviser Al Haymon and does not want to sign another contract with Top Rank. But there are more difficulties awaiting Chavez if the boxer decides to change his promoter. According to Arum, the contract with Top Rank and Zanfer Promotions binds Chavez for one year and a half.
“We have until the fall 2015. That’s where his contract goes, whether it’s one fight or more than one fight. He passed on this opportunity. We’re prepared to offer him another fight as we go. In other words. If he doesn’t want to extend the contract, that’s fine. But we have a contract that goes until October of 2015. So that’s what they haven’t explained to him. When we said we wanted another fight for him after this (Golovkin) fight, what we were saying was within the period of time of our contract. But you have everybody buzzing in his ear, so that’s unfortunate. But we’re going to offer him another fight and, as I said, we’ll offer him a couple of fights and we won’t extend his contract past where it is now, which is the end of October 2015,” Arum said.
Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler also confirmed the information that Golovkin-Chavez fight was cancelled. Loeffler and Golovkin are now considering other opponents for July.
Daniel Geale’s promoter Bill Tracy said that they have started negotiations with Loeffler for the Golovkin fight.
In the end of the May, Geale was scheduled to fight Matthew Macklin. But the fight was called of because of Mike Perez’s injury. This gave Geale a chance to fight Golovkin.
