Captain of Kazakhstan's Astana Pro Team Fabio Aru has won the prestigious 2015 Vuelta Espana, Tengrinews reports citing Vesti.kz.
Aru completed the 70th edition of Vuelta in 85 h 36' 13". The Italian was followed by Joaquim Rodriquez from Team Katusha (+57") and Rafal Majka from Tinkoff-Saxon (+1'09").
Despite Tom Dumoulin's take over in stages 17-19, Aru was able to regain his leading position in the final two stages.
“I really cannot believe what we achieved today. My teammates were exceptional today. Some got into the break, others worked to raise the tempo, Mikel Landa did an amazing job. This victory is thanks to my teammates, not me. It was very stressful, but I am so happy to have this leader’s jersey. We knew the penultimate climb was very difficult. (…) This is the most beautiful win of my career, and Dumoulin has demonstrated that he is a rider for grand tours in the future,” Aru said via Velonews.
In an interview to Vesti.kz, Aru said that the red jersey was the work of the whole team.
Aru's next goal is winning Tour de France. "Next week we are deciding on my preparation schedule. But I think I will be preparing for Tour de France," the Italian cyclist capped for the Kazakh team said.
Aru plans to be at Tour of Almaty in Kazakhstan which kicks off on October 4. "I'm coming to Tour of Almaty to meet with fans in Kazakhstan. I feel love of Kazakhstanis. They treat me like home. I will be happy to take part in the race," Aru said.
The 2015 Vuelta a Espana started 22 August and finished on 13 September 2015.
