Saul “Canelo” Alvarez said he wanted to face Gennady “GGG” Golovkin of Kazakhstan, Tengrinews reports citing Vesti.kz.
“Canelo is telling me he wants to fight ‘GGG'. Canelo wants to fight him (Golovkin). Canelo is not afraid of nobody. He’s a guy who wants to go up against the very best. Canelo is a fighter who, just like myself, just like Hopkins, he’s willing to take the risk,” Canelo’s promoter Oscar De La Hoya told boxingnews24.com.
Answering a question from BoxingScene on whether Golovkin-Maywether fight is possible, De La Hoya said that it would not happen.
“(Mayweather-GGG) will never happen. It will never happen, let’s put it that way. One fight that most likely will happen, who is willing to take the challenge is Triple G vs. Canelo. They have sparred many times before. In time, I am very optimistic that (Canelo-GGG) will happen – given time and once Canelo is ready to move up 160 and he gets a little older. He just turned 24, so he’s got time. All of those dangerous fights Canelo is willing to take,” De La Hoya.
The Mexican boxer is currently fighting in the light middleweight category (66.7–69.9 kg), while Triple G is in the middleweight category (-72.5 kg) .
Before the Golovkin-Geale fight in July, De La Hoya said that they were interested in organizing a fight between the Kazakhstani boxer and Canelo. Earlier, Golovkin, too, stated that he wanted to fight Canelo as one of the PPV fighters.
But, in the meanwhile, De La Hoya wants his fighter to face Miguel Cotto in 2015.
Golovkin’s next fight is scheduled to February 21, 2015 in Monte Carlo, Monaco against a British boxer Martin Murray.
In November, Golovkin is planning press conferences with his Kazakhstani fans in Almaty and Astana. GGG who is currently residing in the U.S. will be participating in a number of official events in Kazakhstan.
