WBA and IBO title holder Gennady Golovkin’s trainer Abel Sanchez hopes to organize a unification fight against WBC champion Miguel Cotto, Tengrinews reports citing Vesti.kz.
Sanchez said that Golovkin wants to fight Cotto at the Madison Square Garden. “I want Cotto here in the Garden. If he calls himself linear 160-pound champion, then he should fight 160-pounder. If not, then vacate the title and go somewhere else – go back to 154. I think public deserves that, the boxers, the organization deserves to have one champion, one 160-pound champion. Hopefully we can unify, Cotto is the one who is most viable at the Garden,” Golovkin’s trainer told BoxingScene.
Gary Shaw, the promoter of Daniel Geale who lost to GGG in the third round, advised Cotto to avoid fighting Golovkin. “Cotto has had a great career. But Golovkin is just another level,” Shaw said.
Meanwhile, Cotto plans to face Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, who refused to fight Golovkin due to financial issues he had with his promoter. The Cotto-Chavez fight is roughly scheduled to December 6.
Sanchez remains hopeful for his fighter to be back to the Madison Square Garden sometime soon.
