In the first round, the 20 y.o. representing Kazakhstan defeated the #1 tennis player at the tournament Andrea Petkovic from Germany with 5:0. Putintseva is ranked 105th, while Petkovic is the 10th in the WTA ranking. The German tennis player had to retire from the game due to a right thigh injury.

I can even feel it when I'm walking now. I don't know exactly why it happened, but everything was okay before that," Petkovic said via WTA.
