Competing in the J1 class in the under 73 kg weight category, Shamey claimed victory in the semifinals with an ippon win over Germany’s Lennart Sass, finishing 10-1.

In the gold medal match, Shamey will face Romania’s Florin-Alexandru Bologa. The decisive bout will take place today.

Shamey is the 2022 World Para Judo Champion from Baku, Azerbaijan, and the gold medalist of the 2023 Asian Para Games in Hangzhou, China.

In March 2024, a short film titled 'A Ray of Hope' was released about Shamey’s life. The 30-minute film details how he lost his vision due to an injury and worked as a market porter to support his family.

The J1 classification in judo refers to athletes with visual impairments, where visual acuity is at or below 2.6 on the Bailey-Lovie chart with binocular vision.

Para judo is designed for athletes with either no vision or very low visual acuity. Athletes in this category wear red circles, indicating they may need assistance before, during, and after the competition.

Kazakhstan breaks record for Paralympic medals

Kazakhstan’s first gold medal of the Paralympics was won by David Degtyarev in para powerlifting. Additionally, Erkin Gabassov earned silver in the 10-meter air rifle standing event, and Dastan Mukashbekov claimed bronze in the shot put.

Kazakhstan’s second gold came from judoka Akmaral Nauatbek in the under 48 kg weight category, where she defeated France’s Sandrine Martinet in the final.
