David Lemieux, the IBF middleweight champion from Canada, commented on his upcoming fight against the undefeated champion Gennady Golovkin from Kazakhstan, Tengrinews reports citing Boxingscene.com.
Golovkin and Lemieux are facing each other in the title unification bout on October 17 at Madison Square Garden. Triple G currently holds the WBA Super, IBO and WBC Interim middleweight titles. Lemieux captured the vacant IBF title in the fight against Hassan N’Dam The fight against the Canadian marks Golovkin’s debut in the HBO PPV.
"I want to fight the best boxers and Golovkin is the best. He is currently at the top. When I beat him, I beat him at his best. I also have a lot of knockouts and a lot of power. This is a guy who comes forward, so I know that I won't have to run after him around the ring. It'll be a war," Lemieux told RDS.
Golovkin holds 91% KO ratio, the highest among middleweight boxers. In turn, Lemieux shows a 86% KO ratio, which is the highest KO ratio among Golovkin's previous opponents.
"Golovkin has a habit of hurting his opponents mentally before demolishing them physically, but I have the power and I know who I'm going to fight. I'm not going there to fight against Golovkin, but I'm going there to win against Golovkin," Lemieux added.
The Canadian's manager Camille Estephan expressed confidence in the upcoming fight against Triple G.
"We would not have taken this fight if we did not believe that David could win. We know it will be difficult, but it will be a battle. People have argued that it could be the fight of the year. The expectations are big," Estephan said.
