Tengrinews.kz – Kazakhstan's Paralympic champion powerlifter David Degtyarev has shared his thoughts on the difference he feels between himself and Olympic champions.

David Degtyarev became the first representative of Kazakhstan to win gold at the Paralympic Games twice, claiming his first gold in Tokyo and successfully competing in Paris in 2024.

"When you read online, it's clear that people support us more, but in real life, there is a noticeable difference in how Olympians and Paralympians are treated and perceived. When a boxer wins gold, it feels different than when a Paralympian wins. In reality, there should be equality; the government has now done so," said the champion in an interview with SportPlus, a Kazakh TV channel.

It is worth noting that, according to legislation, champions of both the Olympic and Paralympic Games receive the same prize money: $250,000 for gold, $150,000 for silver, and $75,000 for bronze.

The 28-year-old native of Akmolinsk region, David Degtyarev, began his journey in powerlifting in 2016. Since then, he has won two world championships and two gold medals at the Paralympics.
