Astana racer wins Vuelta stage 1812 september 2014, 17:29
Italian cyclist Fabio Aru, who races for Kazakhstan team Astana, has won the 18th stage of the prestigious Vuelta a Espagna, Tengrinews cites Vesti.kz.
Fabio Aru from Astana completed the 157 kilometre stage in 3 hours 47 minutes and 17 seconds. Briton Chris Froome of Sky came second, one second (+1 second) behind the leader, and Spaniard Alejandro Valverde of Movistar came third, 13 seconds behind the leader. Captain of Russian Katyusha Joaquim Rodriguez finished fourth.
This is the second win for Aru during the Vuelta. Previously, he won the 11th stage of the race.
In the general classification the leadership is with Spaniard Alberto Contador of Tinkoff-Saxo, followed by Froome and Valverde. Fabio Aru is fifth, losing more than three minutes to the leader.
Fabio Aru, 24, is an Italian professional road bicycle racer capped for UCI ProTeam Astana. He joined the team midway through the 2012 season, after four years with the Palazzago domestic team in Italy.
In the 2014 Giro d'Italia, Aru won stage 15 and came third overall. In his next Grand Tour, the 2014 Vuelta a Espana, Aru won the Stage 11 summit finish atop Alto de San Miguel de Aralar, attacking the leading group with one kilometer to go. He repeated the feat on Stage 18 finishing Monte Castrove. He escaped with Chris Froome near the end of the climb and outsprinted his rival.
