Almaty will host Ski-Orienteering Championship in 2013, reports citing President of Kazakhstan Orienteering Federation Irina Scheglova.

“I just came back from France, where International Federation made a decision to let Almaty host the World Championship in January 2013. We are expecting participants from 35 countries: about 200 sportsmen. Representatives of the Federation, which is 50 years old this year, have highly evaluated Kazakhstan's contribution into development of orienteering sport in the past years,” Scheglova said.

According to her, Kazakhstan will have to work a lot to keep the same pace in development of orienteering sport that was taken during preparation to the Asian Games. “It's no secret that there is currently no such financial support as we have had before the Asian Games. Each sportsman is seeking a financially suitable place to improve their professional level. We are forced to look for sponsors, ask sports organizations for support, but I think there will be a change by the beginning of the winter season and we won't be left without support, otherwise we will lose everything that we have gained in these four years,” the Federation President said.

Winner of four gold medals in the Asian Games Kazakhstan sportsman Mikhail Sorokin went to the training camp in Ufa at his own cost recently. Another Kazakhstan ski-orienteering leader Olga Novikova, who has also won four gold medals in the Asian Games, has been training in Schuchinsk with another Kazakhstan sportsman Aslan Tokbayev for the last 1.5 months. Astana Tourism and Sports Department helped fund their training expenses.

“All sportsmen are currently in Kazakhstan, they are preparing for the World Championship stage to be held in Schuchinsk in February. They do general fitness training, work on maps and ski-roller preparation. They are working very hard,” Scheglova added.

Kazakhstan ski-orienteering team won 14 medals, including 8 gold ones, in the Asian Games held in Almaty and Astana in January-February 2011. Kazakhstan team was ranked first by team's score winning 70 medals, 32 of them were gold.
