2 Kazakhstani girls reach Wimbledon's fourth round01 july 2014, 18:01
Kazakh tennis players Zarina Diyas and Yaroslava Shvedova have made it to the fourth round of the Wimbledon, Tengrinews reports citing Vesti.kz.
In the match of the third Grand Slam series tournament Zarina Diyas beat Vera Zvonareva with a score 7:6 (7:1), 3:6, 6:3.
The Kazakh was playing with Romanian Simona Halep in the quarterfinals, the highest remaining seed on the tournament after the defeats of Na Li and Serena Williams.
It is the first time in her career that Zarina Diyas reaches the fourth round of a Grand Slam tournament. She reached the third round for the first time in her career at this year's Australian Open, but lost to Simona Halep. At the Roland Garros Zarina lost to the fifth seed Petra Kvitova in the first round.
At this year's Wimbledon Zarina Diyas beat Kristina Mladenovic of France in the first round, and knocked out the 15th-ranked Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain in the second.
Kazakhstan’s top-ranked Yaroslava Shvedova is also playing in the fourth round with Germany’s Sabine Lisicki. Shvedova reached the quarterfinals after 19-year old Madison Keys (ranked 30) refused to continue the struggle due to an injury. The match was stopped on June due to onset of darkness in a tiebreaker in the second set when the score was 6:7 (7), 6:6 in favor of the Kazakhstani player. The meeting was to resume on June 30.
However, without Keys’ resistance, Shvedova advanced to the fourth round of Wimbledon, where she is meeting with the winner of the match between German Sabine Lisicki and Serbian Ana Ivanovic.
Both players were to meet their opponents today. Unfortunately, Zarina Diyas has lost the match with a score of 3:6, 0:6. Yaroslava is heading for the decisive third set after loosing the first and winning the second set 3:6, 6:3.
