Tengrinews.kz – An 18-year-old goalkeeper for Almaty’s Kairat, Sherkhan Kalmurza, may step in for injured teammate Temirlan Anarbekov in upcoming UEFA Champions League matches.
During yesterday’s match between Kairat and Aktobe, 21-year-old Anarbekov was forced off in the 13th minute with what doctors described as a fractured jaw. According to the club’s press service, he will miss the next games.
With first-choice keeper Alexander Zarutsky still recovering from an injury sustained against Celtic, Kalmurza is expected to take on the starting role. Zarutsky is not expected back until October. Kairat’s UEFA squad also includes 19-year-old Ildar Mendygaliev and 18-year-old Dias Reimov.
Kairat will face Sporting Lisbon in their first group-stage match on September 18–19 at the José Alvalade Stadium. Kick-off is set for midnight Kazakhstan time.

How Kalmurza became a meme
Kalmurza went viral during Kairat’s away clash with Celtic earlier this season. Cameras captured the teenager nervously waiting on the bench when both of the team’s senior goalkeepers were injured within minutes of each other. For a brief moment, it seemed the rookie might be thrown into action on one of the toughest European stages.
Although Anarbekov managed to finish that match, the incident turned the young keeper into a social media sensation. Now, just weeks later, the meme may finally become reality.
