Participants of the Spirit of Tengri festival have arrived to Almaty. They are rehearsing and awaiting the beginning of the show, Tengrinews reports.

This year, the festival have brought together musicians from 11 countries. Namgar band much loved by Kazakhstanis will be performing with a Finnish singer Nillas Holmberg and a music band led by Norwegian jazz musician Ole Jørn Myklebust known for their work with famous Mari Boine Persen.

The musicians started collaborating at the Norweigian Sami Music Festival Riddu Riđđu in Summer 2013. The Nordic Namgar duo combines unique vocals of the Buryat singer Namgar and Scandinavian spirit. The songs performed by Nordic Namgar are based on ancient incantations and tales.

Musicians talked about the significance of The Spirit of Tengri.

“We are grateful to the organizers of the festival for inviting us. We will perform for our Kazakhstani friends with great pleasure. Almaty, Kazakhstan is becoming closer and closer to our hearts. It is wonderful a place full of wonderful people,” Namgar said.

Namgar has previously participated in The Spirit of Tengri

“I think a project like The Spirit of Tengri is significant not only for Kazakhstan but also for other countries. A festival that brings together so many people and artists to restore the heritage of ethnic minorities is, in my opinion, truly important,” Nordic band members noted.

A Georgian band The Shins is participating in the festival for the second time this year. The musicians define their genre as Iberia-Caucasian jazz. The-Shins originated in 1998 in Germany, where musicians Zaza Miminoshvili, Zurab Gagnidze and Mamuka Gaganidze are still living and working. The musicians became legendary in Georgia long ago having worked with the State Rustavelli Theatre and other major projects. In 1992 Miminoshvili was acknowledged as the best jazz acoustic guitar player in Georgia.

“There are not many of those types of festivals and they are very important. In the 21st century we are creating a new culture, the World music that no one knew of before. Each culture has developed in its own direction, like the European or Asian ones have. But now we are gathering it all together to create a new language for the future and the present. The goal of the festival is to build bridges between various cultures,” the Georgian musicians said.

Gagnidze has worked with Chaka Khan, Shankar La l and Okay Temiz. He collaborates with Giya Kancheli, the composer-in-residence for the Royal Flemish Philharmonic in Antwerp.

Argymak

Bashkir band Argymak are well known to Kazakhstanis too. The musicians write original songs based on Bashkir epic legends. Young and talented artists from Argymak aside from playing kuray pipe and two stringed dumbyra, experiment with African drums, Latin American percussion drums, and electric and bass guitars.

“The Spirit of Tengri unites, teaches and gives. It is a festival we take from and try to contribute to. There is a great exchange of energy. That is why, hail to The Spirit of Tengri and organizers of the festival! We keep thanking the organizers because such a high level of organization of the festival is to be envied,” Argymak said.

The Spirit of Tengri takes place on June 6 and 7 at the square in front of the Republic Palace at 7 pm. Bring your good mood and an umbrella in case of a light shower. The Spirit of Tengri and its participants await for lovers of music and culture.
