Some 3,000 Russian Communist Party supporters took to the streets of Moscow Friday, waving Soviet flags and bearing portraits of Lenin to mark the 97th anniversary of the Bolshevik Revolution, AFP reports.

The demonstration, which included a large contingent of youths, wound its way through the Russian capital escorted by models of armoured vehicles once used in the Soviet Union.

Bolsheviks rose up in armed insurrection on November 7, 1917 in an uprising that led to the creation of the Soviet Union.

"Long live Socialism! Long live the workers, who are the source of all victories!," Communist Party leader Gennady Zyuganov told cheering supporters.

"It's ideals live on in those who are engaged new and just societies in China, in Vietnam, in Cuba and in Venezuela," he said.

The celebration offers reminders of an era when Russia was locked in a Cold War with the West that would end with the Soviet Union's collapse in 1991.

Tensions between Russia and the West are once again on the rise, with clashes over Russia's involvement in the crisis in Ukraine.
