Almaty citizens cycled the city's streets in Kazakh, Roman and Byzantine costumes to celebrate the Sports Day, one of the organizers of the event Alexander Gegeris told Tengrinews.kz. Since costume parades are not traditional to Kazakhstan only 30 participants out of 1.5 thousand came to the parade wearing costumes this time. According to the organizers, the event was called to promote cycling, healthy lifestyle and tourism in Kazakhstan. Guests from Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and even France participated in the event together with Kazakhstan nationals. The cyclists rode along Al-Farabi Avenue to the First President's Park. A festive show awaited them at the end of the distance. Participants who had the most attractive and unusual costumes and bikes received prizes. The winners were selected by the audience. "We are also planning to hold a cycling parade on August 30," Gegeris said. The organizers said that the road quality was excellent; the avenue was recently overhauled specially for the upcoming cycling marathon. The Costume Bike Parade is going to become an annual event. "This is important for development of tourism in Kazakhstan. Considering the format of cycling marathon, it attracts curious tourists as well as cyclists," Gegeris said. The organizers plan to rearrange the cycling parade to hold it the middle of the day instead of the early morning, so that more cyclists and fans take part in the event. Besides, they plan to make a schedule of cycling events so that all the residents of Almaty city are aware of where and when the parade and other races are going to take place.
