Kazakhstan mountain climber Zhumayev supports Kok-Zhailau skiing resort construction

Kazakhstan mountain climber Maksut Zhumayev who has conquered all 14 eight thousanders supports construction of Kok-Zhailau skiing resort in Almaty. The athlete interviewed by Tengrinews.kz correspondent said that he was ready to help create the unique resort.

Zhumayev is going to open a climbing school to teach new climbers. “Being an athlete I wish that our mountains are developed in nature friendly and civilized way. We’ve got a lot of professional climbers. We should start with children, train them, develop rock climbing. Kok-Zhailau could become a good site for training and attraction of tourists from different countries,” the climber said.

Zhumayev believes that it is necessary to open children’s campuses in Almaty mountains. This will help the young generation improve their health and become athletes. “I am ready to dedicate all my to development of mountainous sports. I would like to help people wishing to try trekking and rock-climbing. We have all the facilities for it. The key point is that our youngsters have the desire,” he added.

According to preliminary estimate the resort could attract about one million tourists a year. Aleksandr Guzhavin, Kok-Zhailau Skiing Resort state company’s director, who participated in the round table on skiing resorts development said that the project was still in the initial phase of the construction. The company is working out the project’s concept and making the feasibility study. Engineers are working to define length of ski passes now. According to Guzhavin, the decision will be make this year. Guzhavin added that ecological issues are of paramount importance and the project’s managers will pay special attention to them. Slavenko Badura, Central Asian International Skiing Federation representative, said that this resort would have great perspectives both in the context of tourism development and large-scale sports events hosting.

350 million tenge ($2.4 million) was allocated for Kok-Zhailau resort’s concept development in Almaty. Construction of infrastructure requires 700 million tenge ($4.7 million). Private investors will provide 2.12 billion tenge ($14.2 million) to build all the sites of the resort.
