Tengrinews.kz – President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev chaired a meeting of Kazakhstan’s Security Council, where cyber threats and measures to safeguard the country’s digital environment were discussed, the Akorda press service reported.

Tokayev recalled that in his recent State of the Nation Address, he set the task of transforming Kazakhstan into a fully digital nation, which requires comprehensive measures in the field of cybersecurity.

The meeting focused on modern cyberthreats and ways to counter them, the protection of critical information infrastructure, the development of the cybersecurity industry, and improvements in training specialists.

Reports were delivered by Minister of Digital Development, Innovation and Aerospace Industry Zhaslan Madiev and Chairman of the National Security Committee Yermek Sagimbayev.

Tokayev stressed the importance of combating cybercrime, including online fraud, and strengthening the capabilities of state agencies involved in cyber investigations. He also highlighted the need to enhance the protection of citizens’ personal data and toughen penalties for data leaks. According to the president, public awareness campaigns are essential to promote safe and responsible behavior online.

“Following the meeting, the President instructed officials to take measures aimed at reducing strategic risks and addressing systemic issues in cybersecurity,” Akorda noted.

In August, Tokayev criticized state bodies for their slow response to data leaks during a government meeting on artificial intelligence. He warned that AI poses fundamentally new threats that traditional mechanisms cannot address quickly enough.

“We all see how neural networks can create biometric copies of individuals, imitate their voice, image and even behavior. This allows access to personal data and bank accounts, and enables the release of fake videos to manipulate public opinion,” Tokayev said at the time.
