President of Russia Dmitry Medvedev awarded medals and orders to space figures on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of human space flight, Russian presidential website reported. Space figures from 15 countries received awards on the occasion of the anniversary. Two Kazakh cosmonauts Toktar Aubakirov and Talgat Musabayev were honored by the medals. They were awarded “For merits in space exploration” as foreign residents. Talgat Musabayev, 60, is a Kazakh test pilot and former cosmonaut who made three spaceflights. His first two spaceflights were long-duration stays aboard the Russian Space Station MIR in 1994 and 1998. His third spaceflight was a short duration visiting mission to the International Space Station (ISS) in 2001. That mission also carried the first paying space tourism Dennis Tito. Toktar Aubakirov, 64, is a retired Kazakh Air Force officer and a former cosmonaut. On October 2, 1991 he launched with Russian cosmonaut Alexander Volkov as flight commander, and the Austrian research cosmonaut Franz Viehbock in Soyuz TM-13 from the Baikonur cosmodrome, and spent over eight days in space.
