Kazakh expedition Following Shoqan Walikhanov’s Caravan Route has crossed the Kyrgyz-Chinese border, Tengrinews correspondent reports.

The project participants traveled from China to Kyrgyzstan through Torugart (Torogat) on August 4. Walikhanov mentioned this border crossing in his writings. The Kazakh scientist came this way from the ancient city of Kashgar, which the expedition has also visited.

"Walikhanov wrote that when they crossed the border, there were many difficulties connected to levies and extortion. On our part, we had a somewhat different situation. Due to strict customs and border rules and bureaucracy, we had to stay at the Chinese border for more than seven hours. Leaving Kashgar at 6 am, we reached Kyrgyzstan only at 5 pm in the evening," expedition member Assel Baybakisheva said.

In Kyrgyzstan, the Kazakhstanis had plans to visit an old caravanserai [a roadside inn] Tash Rabat. This is perhaps the only building that was described by Walikhanov in detail and which has been preserved to the present day.

The Kazakhstanis intended to see lake Chadyrkol, which was also mentioned by the Kazakh scientist. Then the group planned to leave Kyrgyzstan’s capital Bishkek in the evening of 5 August and board a flight to Almaty.
