Only 3 percent of Kazakhstan’s imams (an Islamic leadership position, often the worship leader of a mosque and the Muslim community) have a higher theological education, 30 percent graduated from special educational institutions and the rest of them only took 3 or 6-month clergy courses, Tengrinews.kz reports citing Chairman of Kazakhstan Agency on Religions Affairs Kairat Lama Sharif. “Those who took the courses are working in rural areas. They lead the believers in the daily 5 time a day namaz (prayer). I would like to note that the Spiritual Management of Muslims of Kazakhstan has a institute for training imams. Around 1,000 imams improve their qualifications every year,” Lama Sharif said. The said 30 percent of imams graduated from the famous Al-Azhar university abroad. Currently 200 Kazakhstan students are studying there. Nur-Mubarak university in Almaty works along the same system as the one used in Al-Azhar, he said. By Linda Buran
