Kazykhanov and Clinton shaking hands
Kazakhstan Foreign Minister Yerzhan Kazykhanov met with the U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in Washington, Tengrinews.kz reports. The parties expressed their satisfaction with the progress reached by Kazakhstan and the U.S. in enhancement of the strategic partnership. Yerzhan Kazykhanov and Hillary Clinton confirmed the mutual intention to further develop partnership based on the strategic dialog on Afghanistan, democratization, security and nonproliferation, energy, trade and investments. Kazakhstan Foreign Minister and the U.S. Secretary of State reached an agreement on annual bilateral consultations under the Strategic Partnership Commission. The parties discussed common interests and efforts of Kazakhstan and the U.S. for stable, secure and prosper development of Afghanistan. Common efforts would have to promote achievement of the goals of regional economic integration and sustainability, Kazykhanov and Clinton stressed. Besides, U.S. Secretary of State and Kazakhstan Foreign Minister exchanged their opinions on importance of the democratic development and efforts of Kazakhstan on enhancement of representative institutions, such as multi-party Majilis (lower chamber of the Parliament), independent media, religious freedoms and civil society. Prior to the second nuclear security summit in Seoul, Kazakhstan and the U.S. discussed joint initiatives on provision of global and regional security. Besides, they agreed on the soonest exchange of the diplomatic notes in relation to the agreement on introduction of 5-year visas and unification of visa fees to simplify traveling between the two countries. The meeting also covered expansion of connections in education, in particular, scientific-technical cooperation between universities and research institutes. This is the first official visit of Kazakhstan Foreign Minister Yerzhan Kazykhanov to the United States. The Minister also took part in the ceremony of awarding state and public figures of the U.S. with Kazakhstan’s state awards. The Minister took part in the opening of the Atlantic Council Conference called 20-year Anniversary of Kazakhstan’s Independence and 20-year Anniversary of Kazakhstan-American Diplomatic Relations.
