Tengrinews.kz - Senate Speaker Maulen Ashimbayev has commented on when Kazakhstan may appoint a vice president after journalists raised the question.

According to Ashimbayev, the issue of appointing a vice president will be decided after the formation of the new Parliament, the Kurultai. He recalled that under Kazakhstan’s new Constitution, the vice president is appointed by the President with the consent of the Kurultai.

“All these issues fall within the competence of the Head of State. All these issues are regulated by the Constitution, which was adopted in a nationwide referendum. After the new Kurultai is elected, the President will make the corresponding decision. These matters are written in our Constitution, and whatever decisions the Head of State makes are his prerogative,” Ashimbayev said.

The post of vice president was secure in Kazakhstan’s new Constitution, which was adopted in a referendum on March 15, 2026. In January, speaking at the fifth meeting of the National Kurultai, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said that the President would personally appoint the vice president and determine the scope of the office’s powers. The key provisions concerning the vice president’s official functions are set out in the Constitution.

On April 10, Tokayev said that the new Constitution would come into force on July 1, 2026, while elections to the Kurultai are scheduled for August.
