Tunisia has sent a request for joining the Customs Union, Tengrinews reports citing RIA Novosti. According to the Tunisian ambassador in Russia Ali Gutali, Tunisia expects to join the Customs Union in the nearest future.

Gutali added that Tunisia hoped to join the Union in the nearest future. “The Customs Union is a very important institution and we want to join this union through creation of a free trade zone. We support the creation of such zone with the Eurasian community. We have already made some moves in this direction, but it takes time,” Gutali said.

The Customs Union was created by Russia, Kazakhstan and Belarus in 2010 and was joined by Armenia in late 2014. Kyrgyzstan is planning to join the economic integration in May 2015.

The economic union covers the area of 20 million square kilometres with a population of 192.9 million people and a nominal GDP of over $2 trillion.

Tajikistan announced its intention to join in September 2012 and Syria expressed readiness to join the Customs Union in October 2013 when Syrian Vice Prime Minister Qadri Jamil was visiting Moscow: “The documentation is ready. We are conducting negotiations with Belarus and Kazakhstan. The negotiations with our Russian partners have been completed. We want to be a part of this organization,” Jamil said.
