Britain’s former Prime Minister Tony Blair has met the governor of Kyzylorda Oblast Krymbek Kusherbayev during the Astana Economic Forum in Astana, Tengrinews reports citing Kyzylorda-news.kz.
They discussed mutual cooperation in the development of the region and set up future plans for implementation of projects.
Kusherbayev said that Kyzylorda oblast "is developing dynamically, and has a well-developed infrastructure and large reserves of minerals." Therefore, mutual cooperation would be helpful in attracting the world's leading investors, especially in steel industry, to bring capital and new technology to the region.
The governor told Tony Blair that implementation of the first phase of Syr Darya Control and Northern Aral Sea Project, initiated by Nazarbayev and spearheaded by the World Bank, yielded positive results for the region.
Kusherbayev also noted that the implementation of the second phase of the project would not only contribute to restoration of the northern part of the Aral Sea but would also significantly raise the standards of living in the Aral region and improve the human development index in the area.
Tony Blair said that there was a possibility of assisting Kyzylorda Oblast and improving the region's investment attractiveness, helping it resolve the ecological problems, and bringing in leading foreign consultants.
