Tengrinews.kz – President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said Kazakhstan should transform into a fully digital state in the near future, speaking at a ceremonial event in Astana marking Energy Workers’ Day.

Congratulating employees of the energy sector on their professional holiday, Tokayev noted that special attention is being paid to workers as part of the Year of Working Professions.

“For our country, the energy sector is of strategic importance. It is impossible to build a strong state without stable energy sources. Work in the energy sector makes a significant contribution to the development of our country, because the results of your labor are felt by every family, by every person. Providing light and heat to our homes is no easy task. I highly value your selfless work and express my sincere gratitude to all of you,” the President said.

Tokayev stressed that achieving Kazakhstan’s long-term goals will require a fundamental modernization of the energy sector and highlighted the country’s steady development.

“We pay special attention to developing the economy and infrastructure and launching modern industries. Our country has entered an era of large-scale digitalization and artificial intelligence. In the foreseeable future, Kazakhstan must become a fully digital state. Extensive work is underway to achieve this goal. An International Artificial Intelligence Center has been opened in Astana. Recently, a supercomputer developed using technologies from a well-known American company was launched. In line with global trends, new data centers and cloud infrastructure will be created. Naturally, all this will pose a serious challenge for the energy sector. Therefore, to accomplish such important tasks, we need to carry out a fundamental modernization of the energy industry,” Tokayev said.

The President also noted progress in electricity generation over recent years.

“Over the past six years, electricity generation has increased by 16 billion kilowatt-hours. This is comparable to the annual consumption of such an industrially developed region as the Karaganda region. Today, Kazakhstan’s power system includes 237 power plants with a total installed capacity of 25 gigawatts and an available capacity of 21 gigawatts. Thanks to state efforts, the resilience of energy facilities and utility networks has been significantly improved. The number of technological disruptions during the last heating season decreased by 27 percent. Nine combined heat and power plants have left the ‘red’ risk zone, while three stations moved into the ‘green’ zone,” he said.

Tokayev also recalled the launch of the “Tariff in Exchange for Investment” program, which aims to maintain infrastructure in proper condition.
