Tengrinews.kz – President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian issued a joint statement highlighting centuries-old historical ties between the two nations, Akorda reported.
Tokayev shared several historical insights illustrating the depth of Kazakh–Iranian relations, noting that the two peoples are connected by shared traditions and cultural heritage.
“I have a number of historical facts. For example, the Great Silk Road passed through the territories of modern Kazakhstan and Iran. It facilitated the spread of technologies and religion and deepened cultural and spiritual relations. In the Iranian archives, records have been preserved about the Kazakh Khanate and about the Kazakhs being a brave people. There were close relations between Khan Tauke and Shah Sultan Husayn. Historical documents show that envoys met in Moscow, and an Iranian ambassador visited the Kazakh steppe. Khan Abulkhair sent an envoy to Nader Shah, expressing a desire to expand ties. The Taykazan in the mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yassawi in Turkistan was crafted in the workshop of Iranian master Abdul-Aziz Sharafuddin Tabrizi,” Tokayev said.
He added that the Kazakh language contains numerous Persian-origin words.
“Scholars believe that Persian words make up about 4 percent of our vocabulary. Among them are astana (capital), paida (benefit), körpe (blanket), dáuren (era), dári (medicine), dáryumen (vitamin), aula (yard), oraza (fasting), and others,” the President noted.
Tokayev also emphasized that more than 5,000 ethnic Kazakhs live today in the Iranian province of Golestan, in the cities of Gorgan, Bandar-e Torkaman and Gonbad-e Kavus.
“The poem Shahnameh by Ferdowsi and its heroes are close to the peoples of Turan. The great Kazakh poet Abai was familiar with the works of Persian poets such as Ferdowsi, Hafez and Saadi. The copies of ancient manuscripts brought by the Iranian delegation contain information about the history and culture of Kazakhstan in the 18th century. The 27 manuscripts include analyses of the socio-economic situation of the Kazakh Khanate, its relations with neighbouring countries, regional competition, the political and economic situation in Turkistan, and actions of the Russian Empire toward Kazakh regions and khanates. They also contain reports on mineral exploration and extraction of coal, iron, copper, lead and turquoise in the Kazakh steppe. This is extremely interesting material. Thank you very much, Mr. President,” Tokayev said.
Tokayev added that the Iranian people are rightful heirs to a great ancient civilization.
“Your country connects the Middle East and Eurasia. In recent years, Iran has demonstrated impressive growth in its socio-economic and scientific-technical potential. I am convinced that these achievements were made possible thanks to your hard work and the balanced policy of Iran’s leadership. Kazakhstan sincerely shares Iran’s success and wishes it a bright future. Our common goal is to strengthen unity between our two peoples and multiply our joint achievements. Clearly, in these challenging times, consolidating efforts becomes even more important,” he said.
Earlier in the day, Akorda hosted the official welcome ceremony for President Pezeshkian, who arrived on an official visit.
