Tengrinews.kz – President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev invoked a well-known Kazakh proverb about good neighbourly relations as he welcomed Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian to Astana for talks in a narrow format.
During the meeting, Tokayev said he was pleased to host Pezeshkian on his first official visit to Kazakhstan, highlighting the value of close ties between the two nations.
“There is a good Kazakh proverb: ‘Körshi tatu bolsa – qut’ (‘When neighbours live in harmony, it brings prosperity’). Our countries are connected by the Caspian Sea. For Kazakhstan, Iran is a close neighbour and a reliable partner in the Middle East. We hold deep respect for the Iranian people. Despite various challenges, we continue to strengthen our cooperation,” Tokayev noted.
He added that relations between the two states are rooted in centuries of shared history.
“We share similar customs, traditions and cultural values. Our interaction spans many centuries, and Kazakhstan consistently supports Iran. There are no unresolved issues between us. I believe our countries have significant potential for further cooperation. Astana and Tehran maintain a constructive political dialogue, including at government level. Bilateral agreements are being implemented, and interparliamentary ties are growing. Trade and economic cooperation is also expanding — in the first 10 months of this year, our trade turnover grew by 40 percent compared to 2024. We must keep this momentum and further increase mutual trade,” he said.
President Pezeshkian, in turn, praised the progress in bilateral cooperation.
“I am glad to visit brotherly and friendly Kazakhstan, a country with a rich history and culture. Our relations are steadily developing across a wide range of areas. Effective cooperation has been established between our governments. I am confident we have enormous potential to deepen partnership in political, economic, cultural, humanitarian fields, as well as in security,” he stated.
Earlier, Akorda hosted an official welcoming ceremony for the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Masoud Pezeshkian.
