Tengrinews.kz - During the "BRICS Plus" summit in Kazan, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev expressed Kazakhstan's backing for the reform and expansion of the United Nations Security Council, highlighting the importance of adding new members from Africa, Latin America, and Asia.
"Kazakhstan supports the reform of the UN Security Council and its expansion to include new members from Africa, Latin America, and Asia. The voices of the Global South must be heard on issues of peace and security. BRICS can play a key role in this process by strengthening the representation of middle powers and developing economies in global governance," Tokayev stated at the summit.
He emphasized that Kazakhstan views BRICS as one of the driving forces of global progress. Tokayev also highlighted the substantial growth in trade between Kazakhstan and BRICS countries, which accounted for nearly half of Kazakhstan's foreign trade in 2023.
In addition, he noted that Kazakhstan is ready to enhance cooperation in transit and transport within the BRICS framework, giving special attention to initiatives such as the Belt and Road and the International North-South Transport Corridor.
Earlier, Tokayev's spokesperson Berik Uali shared that Kazakhstan had received invitations to join BRICS, which are currently being reviewed by the government.
At the summit, President Tokayev also held brief discussions with key leaders, including Chinese President Xi Jinping, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.
