Tengrinews.kz - Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokaev has proposed organizing a “brainstorming session” in Astana for Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) countries to explore new avenues for economic growth and cooperation.
Speaking at the CIS Heads of State Council meeting, Tokaev highlighted the organization’s role as an effective mechanism for building trust among member states. Ahead of the CIS’s 35th anniversary, he presented several initiatives aimed at strengthening strategic partnerships and enhancing the efficiency of the bloc.
“Last year, the total trade turnover among CIS countries increased by 8 percent to reach $110 billion. At the same time, Kazakhstan’s trade with CIS countries over the past five years grew one and a half times, totaling $38 billion. These figures demonstrate that while the economic potential of the Commonwealth is significant, it is far from fully realized. We have a solid institutional and legal framework to further expand trade and economic cooperation,” Tokaev said.
The President emphasized the importance of ensuring direct, unhindered access to service markets on a reciprocal basis, launching joint productions, expanding cooperative links in key sectors, attracting investment, utilizing transit and transport potential effectively, and implementing digital solutions.
“To identify additional sources of economic growth for CIS member states, we propose holding a specialized ‘brainstorming session’ at an international forum in Astana next April under the UN’s aegis. Leading experts and analysts from CIS countries could contribute to solving today’s most pressing challenges,” he added.
Tokaev also reminded that Kazakhstan will chair the Eurasian Economic Union in 2026, during which several key events, including the Eurasian Economic Forum, are planned. He invited colleagues, government officials, and business representatives from CIS countries to actively participate and suggested considering granting the forum the status of a joint EAEU-CIS event.
