Tengrinews.kz – President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, speaking at the “SCO Plus” summit, stressed the need to reform the United Nations, Akorda reported.
“In today’s complex geopolitical realities, we must support the UN as a universal and independent organization. At the same time, the need for reform has matured, primarily in its key body – the Security Council. We fully understand the difficulty of such reform, but there is no other way. If the current generation of leaders refuses to carry out this task, it could finally and irreversibly undermine states’ trust in the UN,” Tokayev said.
He also praised the Global Governance Initiative put forward by Chinese President Xi Jinping at the summit, noting that it provides a long-term vision for the development of the international community and complements efforts to build a fairer and more sustainable world order.
Tokayev separately thanked SCO leaders for supporting the transformation of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (CICA) into a full-fledged international organization.
The Kazakh president arrived in Tianjin on August 30 to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit, where he also held talks with Xi Jinping.
On September 2, he is scheduled to address the Kazakhstan-China Business Council in Beijing and meet with executives of major Chinese companies.
On September 3, Tokayev will take part as a guest of honor in ceremonies marking the 80th anniversary of Victory in World War II.
