Early presidential elections will help Kazakhstan prevent provocations from outside and tackle external conflicts, Serik Seidumanov, a member of the Majilis, the lower chamber of Kazakhstan’s Parliament is quoted by Tengrinews as saying.
On February 14, the Board of the Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan suggested holding presidential election in Kazakhstan ahead of time. The election is scheduled for 2016, but the Assembly proposed to hold them this year.
According to the Assembly, amid the intensifying global economic crisis the early election would enable Kazakhstan to efficiently implement the Nurly-Zhol Anti-Crisis Program and to further pursue the long-term priorities set by the Kazakhstan-2050 Strategy.
“In this tough period we urge all the Kazakhstanis to unite around Nursultan Nazarbayev, the incumbent leader of the country. It is important to ensure through the early election a continuous economic growth and consistency of the policies. There are no alternatives to this initiative. Besides, 2016 is the year of both presidential and parliamentary elections. It is reasonable to hold the two elections at different time to make sure all the constitutional norms are fully respected,” the Assembly said in the appeal to the deputies representing the Assembly of the People in the country’s Majilis.
Serik Seidumanov also expressed his support for holding presidential elections this year. “This Sunday, I witnessed the reaction of Almaty residents to the suggestion of the Kazakhstan’s Assembly of the People (regarding the early presidential elections). It was unexpected, but this reaction gave way to approval. It was evident people breathed freely. This initiative on early elections removes secret fears. Moreover, our people are aware of the complexity of the external situation. People almost immediately understood that it was a chance to solve the important issues and go through period of trials under the leadership of Elbasy (President Nazarbayev)," Serik Seidumanov said.
According to him, economic and geopolitical crisis in the world had been deepening. He called the people of Kazakhstan to be even more united in the difficult time.
“Today, elections are more than just elections. They are necessary as a response to the external threats, as an opportunity to overcome the difficulties. They will unite us and strengthen our trust in our country Kazakhstan. The global situation is extreme in many ways. The economic and geopolitical crisis are becoming more complex. We see it every day on the Internet and TV. Now the threat of conflicts in the post-Soviet space is growing. That is, a crisis is unfolding right at our borders. This creates prerequisites for all sorts of provocations and spills of external problems into our territory. This is not just a frightening story. (...) We need elections to unite around Elbasy. Elections must demonstrate that the people are united together with their president," the deputy said.
Meanwhile, Kazakhstan's ruling party Nur Otan and the leader of the parliamentary faction of the People's Communists in the Majilis Vladislav Kosarev have already declared their support to the idea of the early presidential elections.
