Tengrinews.kz – Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan expressed gratitude to President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev after Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev announced the lifting of restrictions on cargo transit through Azerbaijan to Armenia, Haqqin.az reports.
Speaking at the 5th Silk Road Forum in Tbilisi, Pashinyan called the announcement a “crucial step” toward peace in the region.
“Yesterday, Ilham Aliyev stated that Azerbaijan is lifting restrictions on cargo transit through its territory toward Armenia. This is an extremely important statement, and I would like to express my gratitude to the President of Azerbaijan for this step. I also want to thank the President of Kazakhstan and the Prime Minister of Georgia for their role in reaching this agreement,” Pashinyan said.
Aliyev’s announcement in Astana
Aliyev made the statement during a press briefing in Astana, following his talks with President Tokayev. He noted that the first transit shipment to Armenia will be Kazakh grain.
“I believe this is a strong sign that peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia is now not only on paper, but in practice,” Aliyev said.
Following his remarks, Armenia’s Minister of Economy Gevorg Papoyan confirmed on Facebook that the first batch of Kazakh wheat will soon be shipped via the Aktau–Baku route, then transported through Azerbaijani and Georgian railways to Armenia.
“Peace has been established,” Papoyan wrote.
Earlier, on August 9, the leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia, in the presence of U.S. President Donald Trump, signed a joint declaration on the cessation of hostilities. At the time, Tokayev described the Washington peace agreement as a “historic achievement.”
