There will be no common currency in the Eurasian Economic Union, said Deputy Justice Minister of Kazakhstan Elvira Asimova at a briefing of the Central Communications service, Tengrinews reports.
"There will be no common currency. Such provisions are not in the draft Treaty," she said.
This concords with the statements made by Vice-Prime-Minister of Kazakhstan Bakytzhan Sagintayev who denied there were any plans to introduce a common curency in the Customs Union space. "I don't know were all this rumors come from, but we were not even discussing a common currency, and its not in the draft agreement," he said in the beginning of April.
However many media outlets keep writing about plans to introduce a common currency, supposedly named "altyn", by 2020, referring to their informed sources.
Common currency is not the only thing that Kazakhstan is opposing in the post-soviet-space-union that is in the making now. At the press-briefing earlier this week Vice Foreign Minister of Kazakhstan Samat Ordabaev declared that common citizenship, common border security, common visa policy were among the common areas proposed by Russia, but opposed by Kazakhstan. In the end they were excluded from the Treaty establishing the Eurasian Economic Union.
The signing of this treaty between Kazakhstan, Russia and Belarus in Astana is scheduled for May 29.
