Serikbai Trumov has been appointed new Akim (Mayor) of Zhanaozen, Interfax-Kazakhstan reports. Trumov was introduced to deputies of Zhanaozen Maslikhat (local executive body) by Mangistau oblast Akim (Governor) Baurzhan Mukhametzhanov. Before that appointment Trumov used to work as Akim of Tupkaragan region. According to Mukhametzhanov, pervious Akim of Zhanaozn Orak Sarbopeyev was released from the office last Wednesday, February 8. “You know that financial police is investigating a case against him,” Mukhametzhanov said. Instructing the new Akim, Mukhametzhanov said: “This is a very difficult job. Not anyone can be in this position. All problems cannot be solved in one day. You should not work alone. Please work with Ozenmunaigas to solve all the existing problems.” Clashes happened in Zhanaozen and Shetpe village on December 16-17, 2011. The riots claimed 15 lives, 100 people were injured. A state of emergency was enacted in Zhanaozen until January 31, 2012. In the end of January Kazakhstan’s General Prosecutor Askhat Daulbayev stated that former and acting Akims of Zhanaozen, Zhalgas Babakhanov (worked as Akim from 1999 to 2009) and Orak Sarbopeyev stole money through Zhanashyr and Zharylkau public endowments. According to official information, the endowments accumulated sponsorship money from EP Kazmunaigaz JSC allocated for the social support of the townsfolk. Babakhanov was later arrested and Sarbopeyev was apprehended by financial police.
