During the SCO summit in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, the President of Kazakhstan talked about key issues that are particularly important in the wake of the unstable geopolitical and economic situation in the world.

“The Head of the State tagged the unsolved boarder problems between the SCO member states as one of the main issues. He stressed the importance of abiding by the terms of the Shanghai and Moscow agreements that address strengthening trust-buidling measures and decreasing the number of armed forces in near boarder areas,” the press office reported.

Nazarbayev noted the importance of ensuring food supply security as one of the key areas of economic cooperation between the SCO member states.

“According to experts, the global population will reach 9 billion by 2050. At the same time, in the following 10 years food production in the world will drop due to climate anomalies. This supports Kazakhstan’s initiative to create a mechanism that would ensure food supply security,” Nazarbayev said.

The Kazakh President noted the pressing issue of water shortage in the region that affected the stability and security in the region. Nazarbayev once again proposed creating a water committee that would become a practical mechanism for solving the issues in the region.

In conclusion, Nazarbayev addressed the initiatives and projects that had been suspended due to discrepancies between the national interests of the member states and the SCO priorities. He noted that the lack of financial resources negatively affected the progress of important economic projects.

Nazarbayev also addressed the complex situation in the Middle East. “Syria, Libya, Iran, the Palestinian-Israeli conflict have turned into an uncontrollable source of instability. The region was dragged into the abyss of terrorism. The destructive elements directly threaten not only the regional security, but the international security in general,” Nazarbayev said.

He congratulated President of Russia Vladimir Putin on his chairmanship in the SCO and wished Russia successful and fruitful work in this position. “I confirm Kazakhstan’s readiness for cooperation in strengthening the development of SCO with regards to its goals and tasks,” he added.
