Majilis deputy Kairbek Suleimenov shared his opinion on methods of countering pedophilia in Kazakhstan with Tengrinews.kz. "We have to counter pedophilia by toughening the criminal legislation and activating preventive work, while parents have to better control their children and communicate with them, be in constant contact with them. Other countries' experience, especially that of Russia, shows that not always but often the children who are not properly controlled and cared for by their parents constitute a majority among victims of pedophiles. Blaming schools is not only an old story, but is also inefficient and wrong. Parents are the ones who are first of all responsible for their children," he said. The deputy also told about his attitude to death penalty in the contexts of pedophilia. Despite the fact that Kazakhstan introduced a moratorium on the capital punishment, the deputy believes that crimes against children have to be punished as strict as possible. "Execution by shooting is long gone and there is a moratorium on the death penalty. But of course, it is possible to apply maximum possible measures for crimes with grave consequences. Pedophilia is not limited to the specific attitude to children itself, but can contain acts of violence or perversion, inflict harm to the health of children who fall its victims and can even result in their deaths. This means that there can be several components in the crime, or there can be a combination of several components. That's why I stand for applying the maximum possible punishments for the grave crimes," Suleimenov said. By Renat Tashkinbayev
