The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan has made a statement in relation to the intensification of the Ukrainian crisis, Tengrinews reports citing the press office of the Ministry.

On January 24, 30 civilians were killed and 83 injured in a heavy rocket fire from long-range GRAD missile systems in the eastern port of Mariupol.

"We are for peace, but we accept the challenge of the enemy. We will protect our motherland," Petro Poroshenko said in a statement, according to Reuters reports.

The EU and the USA condemned the Russian-backed separatists for the attack on Mariupol. German Chancellor Angela Merkel urged her Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in a phone call Sunday to "put pressure" on Ukraine's pro-Kremlin separatists to end the recent upsurge in violence that sparked international alarm.

Meanwhile, the Kazakh Ministry of Foreign Affairs, highly concerned with the intensification of the conflict issued a statement.

“We express deep concern in relation to the escalation of the conflict in Ukraine, in particular the attack that killed a number of civilians. We are adamant that there are no alternatives to peaceful negotiations to solve the crisis in the southeast of Ukraine. We urge the parties to solve the conflict through peaceful means based on fulfilment of the undertaken obligations, including the Minsk agreement,” the Ministry stated.

Kazakhstan expressed readiness to provide a platform for peaceful negotiations to solve the Ukrainian crisis in any required format and at any time.

Earlier, the Norman Format summit to be held Astana called to settle the conflict was postponed to the end of January.
