Kazakhstan’s President Nursultan Nazarbayev has called Kazakhstanis "a nation of united future", Tengrinews reports.

During the XVI Congress of Kazakhstan’s ruling Nur Otan party that took place in Astana on March 11, the Kazakh President spoke about developing and strengthening the Kazakh identity.

Around 2,000 people attended Nur Otan's Congress. More than 1,200 of them were delegates from different regions of Kazakhstan, members of Kazakhstan's Parliament, heads of state agencies, national companies, NGOs, Kazakh artists, scientists and intellectuals, representatives of the diplomatic corps, international organizations and the media.

“We, Kazakhstanis, are the nation of united future. That says everything. There should be no differentiation between ethnic groups: we are all Kazakhstanis. We have made a substantial progress in developing our own model of stability and accord in the country. Kazakhstan’s Constitution guarantees equal rights to all the citizens regardless of their race, ethnicity, religion and social class. The state bodies that are responsible for making sure that laws are abided by must also ensure observance of the Constitution, and not just by repeating what is written there. A further strengthening of the Kazakh identity is necessary, that is, we should be (united) like fingers in a fist,” Nazarbayev appealed to the people of Kazakhstan.

“This should be primarily based on the principle of citizenship. All citizens should be entitled to the same set of rights, bear the same burden of responsibility and have equal opportunities. If the public service follows the principle of meritocracy – honestly, through ompetition, then all the nationalities (representatives of all ethnic groups) will have access to the job 'elevator', and it will no longer be a matter of employing the ones they want,” the president said.

In the end, the participants of the congress unanimously nominated Nursultan Nazarbayev as a candidate for the coming presidential elections scheduled for April 26 this year.  Nursultan Nazarbayev agreed to accept the nomination. “We need to move forward. That is why, I will probably agree with your proposal to nominate me as a candidate. This will enable me to pursue new tasks, challenging ones, that we have to deal with,” Nazarbayev said in response.
