Kazakhstan's Foreign Minister Yerlan Idrissov has met with the Foreign Minister of Tajikistan Sirodjidin Aslov, Tengrinews reports citing the press service of Kazakhstan's Foreign Affairs Ministry.

On June 16, 2014 Kazakhstan’s Foreign Minister Yerlan Idrissov had a meeting with the Foreign Minister of Tajikistan Sirodjidin Aslov during the latter's first official visit to Kazakhstan.

They discussed the current state and prospects of bilateral cooperation between the two states and the key issues of regional cooperation and international agenda.

Yerlan Idrissov highlighted that Tajikistan was one of the most important political and economic partner of Kazakhstan in Central Asia. In this context, he stressed the need to deepen the trade and economic relations.

The priority areas of the bilateral cooperation are mining, nonferrous metallurgy, machinery, power, light industry, transport and communications, and agriculture.

They agreed that revitalization of the bilateral intergovernmental commission for economic cooperation (IPC) - its next session to take place in Dushanbe this year - was an important mechanism facilitating mutually beneficial cooperation.

The foreign ministers also dwelt on the situation in the water and energy sectors in the Central Asian region. "We are convinced that cooperation in this area is possible only through strengthening of mutual trust, transparency and pursuing mutual interests of all the countries of the region," the head of Kazakhstan’s Foreign Ministry said.

In this context, Yerlan Idrissov underlined the importance of the regional integration process. "We will seek to promote the integrated relations in our region. Central Asia has always been a special priority of our foreign policy and our efforts will be focused on development of these relations, " he added.

The two foreign ministers expressed satisfaction with the level and content of their multilateral cooperation within the framework of regional and international organizations.

In particular, Kazakhstan’s Foreign Minister praised Tajikistan's chairmanship in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and expressed confidence that the chairmanship headlined Cooperation, Co-development and Co-prosperity will give a new impetus to the development and strengthening of the Organization. He also wished his Tajik counterpart the successfully lead the Council of Foreign Ministers of the SCO in July this year and the summit of the organization in September in the course of which a bilateral meeting of Kazakhstani and Tajik Presidents is scheduled to take place.

Yerlan Idrissov thanked Tajikistan for supporting Kazakhstan's bid for non-permanent membership in the UN Security Council in 2017-2018.

Signing of a Cooperation Plan between the foreign ministries of the two countries for 2014-2015 was an important outcome of the talks. It is called to strengthen the political dialogue between the two countries.

Diplomatic relations between Kazakhstan and Tajikistan were established back in 1993. Since independence, the two countries have been developing their bilateral ties in the spirit of friendship and partnership. Today, Kazakhstan and Tajikistan have extensive legal base of bilateral relations, including more than 70 existing documents, which cover almost all the areas of their cooperation.
