The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan has confirmed that it received appeals from some of the member of Syrian opposition asking President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev to provide a platform for Syrian talks, Tenginrews reports citing the press service of the Ministry.

A commentary of Kazakhstan’s Special Envoy - Foreign Ministry Spokesman Altai Abibullayev was published on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

"As befits such cases and as required by the rules of courtesy, the appeal was reviewed. Based on this, a response letter was sent on behalf of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan Yerlan Idrissov," the commentary says.

It also said that Kazakhstan supported the efforts of the international community, the UN, the Arab League, the United States, the Russian Federation, the Syrian government and the opposition aimed “at determining the political future of Syria through dialogue and reconciliation, with a view to a speedy end to violence and bloodshed.”

Therefore, Kazakhstan expresses its hopes for continuation of talks between the Syrian government and the opposition at the conference "Geneva-2," supporting only peaceful means in resolving the conflict.

And this is the angle from which the appeal of the Syrian opposition was viewed.

Abibullayev said that Kazakhstan was “ready to consider the possibility of creating a dialogue platform for the parties concerned, and, on this basis, invites the authors of the appeal to Astana for the first informal and non-public exchange of views.” It was specified that only a deeper review of the appeal was on the agenda, which is why its authors were invited to Kazakhstan to “better understand the grounds for further discussion.”

The letter specifically pointed out that the format, representativeness of delegations, commitments and ultimate goals of the participants of the proposed discussion platform were particularly important for its success. It was also streesed that “Kazakhstan has no ambitions of solving the Syrian crisis or intentions of replacing the existing platforms,” such as the ones in Geneva or Moscow.

The Kazakh side expressed its deep concern over the grave humanitarian crisis in Syria and called the international community to prioritise the resolution of this issue first and foremost.
