Kazakhstan and Iran discuss renewal of oil swaps

Kazakhstan and Iran have discussed possibilities of renewing petroleum swap operations, Kazakhstan’s President Nursultan Nazarbayev announced following his talks with his Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani.


Kazakhstan and Iran have discussed possibilities of renewing petroleum swap operations, Kazakhstan’s President Nursultan Nazarbayev announced following his talks with his Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani.

“We are inviting Iranian businesses to participate in agriculture projects in Kazakhstan. Iran expressed its interest in the realm. Underdeveloped transport infrastructure is a hurdle to effective development of cooperation. This year some transport projects are going to be completed to give an impetus to the bilateral trade and economic cooperation. (…) Thirdly, Kazakhstan is thinking of a number of investment projects involving the Iranian side in Kyzylorda oblast: plans are afoot to launch a glass making facility, a facility to produce alumina, and a leach plant in Karaganda oblast. Fourthly, we are thinking of activating oil swap operations between the countries within the common Caspian area”, President Nazarbayev said.

Apart from that, the sides dwelt on activation of cooperation in the West of Kazakhstan and northern province of Iran, and on cooperation in scientific research.

According to President Nazarbayev, the sides broached a number of region-scaled issues such as the situation in Iraq, Syria, Israeli-Palestinian issues Iran is involved to tackle.

In his turn, Hassan Rouhani announced that they “had discussed simplification of banking ties, prospects of cooperation between Iran and the Customs Union of Kazakhstan, Russia and Belarus”.
