Kazakhstan and the EU on Thursday made an official statement on completing the talks on a new extended Agreement on partnership and cooperation and on resolving all bilateral issues regarding Kazakhstan’s accession into the WTO. The statement was made by Kazakhstan’s President Nursultan Nazarbayev and José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission, Tengrinews.kz reports, citing the President’s website.

“Today Kazakhstan and the EU have signed a document to mark completion of bilateral talks on Kazakhstan’s accession into the WTO and talks on a new extended agreement on partnership and cooperation. The documents are of great importance to Kazakhstan. We first broached the subject of the new agreement back in 2006. The talks that were especially active for the last 3-4 years have been successfully completed. Kazakhstan is the first Central Asia state to sign an agreement of the 2nd generation with the EU. This will bring the relations to a higher level, emphasizing the strategic nature and maturity of the bilateral partnership”, President Nazarbayev told a briefing in Brussels.

According to him, EU nations account for 50% of Kazakhstan’s foreign trade and 50% of FDI that “have helped support the nation’s economy”. “Kazakhstan, in its turn, has become a major trade and economic partner of the EU in Central Asia”, he said.

President Nazarbayev stressed that one of the key aspects of the new agreement is its updated trade-related set of clauses: “the new agreement takes into account the obligations Kazakhstan is taking when entering the WTO and those taken within the Customs Union and the Eurasian Economic Union. A true break-through in the relations between Kazakhstan and the EU is the agreement [to be drafted] to simplify the visa regime between the two sides”.

“The new agreement is a practical tool to facilitate successful operations of Kazakhstan and European entrepreneurs. It will also strengthen contacts between citizens of the two sides”, President said.

“Kazakhstan is a major partner for the EU not only in the trade and economic realm, but also in the realm of peace and safety efforts in the region. The new agreements facilitate further expansion of ties. The agreement on extended partnership and cooperation will bolster a stronger political, economic and strategic interaction; it will also cover trade and investments”, José Manuel Barroso said.

Back in May 2014 President Nazarbayev expressed hope that Kazakhstan would access the WTO by the end of 2014.
