Akims (Governors) of Kazakhstan cities have joined Mayors for Peace organization, Tengrinews.kz reports, citing the Ministry's of Foreign Affairs official representative. Altay Abibullayev announced that Jean-Luc Dehaene, the Mayor of the city of Ypres (Belgium) and the head of Mayors for Peace organization's international secretariat visited Kazakhstan on March 16-19 as part of European delegation to Kazakhstan. “The goal of the organization is to develop solidarity of nations and to fight for nuclear-free world through strengthening ties between the cities. The delegation will consist of the city of Ypres (Belgium), Biograd Na Moru (Croatia) and Frogn (Norway) Mayors as well as business community representatives," Altay Abibullayev said. Kazakhstan Akims of the cities and oblasts met with the delegation. Akims of Ust-Kamenogorsk, Semey, Kurchatov, Karaganda, Pavlodar, Ridder and Zyryanovsk joined Mayors for Peace at the meeting. The delegation also met the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan. This visit was timed to the anniversary of Japan tragedy, the Fukushima nuclear plant meltdown. “The President of Kazakhstan allocated one million dollars as a financial aid to Japan. The President suggested to to work out universal principles of peaceful use of nuclear power in the view of Fukushima nuclear plant accident when he gave a speech in the UN General Assembly's session on September 2011,” the Ministry's of Foreign Affairs official representative said.
