Tengrinews.kz – Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Defense has confirmed the detention of a staff member from the country’s military attaché office by Polish law enforcement authorities.

The ministry’s Center for International Relations said Kazakhstan is working with the foreign side to resolve the situation and is taking all necessary measures to protect the rights and legitimate interests of its citizen.

Earlier, media reports claimed that an assistant to Kazakhstan’s military attaché had been arrested in Poland on suspicion of espionage.

On August 2, Polish media reported the detention of a career officer from a foreign military intelligence service. Polish Interior Minister Tomasz Siemoniak posted similar information on social media platform X.

According to Polish authorities, the suspect allegedly collected information that posed a threat to the security of Poland and its allies. Siemoniak described the man as a “professional military intelligence officer” from one of the former Soviet republics in Asia, saying he operated between March 15 and July 30 in Warsaw and Bydgoszcz.

“The Internal Security Agency (ABW) detained a citizen of one of the Asian countries formed after the collapse of the USSR. The National Prosecutor’s Office has charged him, and on August 1, 2025, a court ordered his arrest for three months,” the statement read.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk confirmed that the arrest took place on July 31 and that the court approved the detention on August 2.

“We will eventually get to anyone who threatens Poland’s security — and most likely sooner rather than later,” Polskie Radio quoted him as saying.

The National Prosecutor’s Office alleged that the suspect used his diplomatic status as cover. He denies the charges, which carry a possible prison sentence of 5 to 30 years.

Kazakh media reported on August 11 that the detainee had served as assistant to the military attaché at Kazakhstan’s embassy in Ukraine.
