The Americans have presented Kazakhstan’s Border Service with modular buildings worth $3 million, Tengrinews reports citing the press service of the US Embassy in Kazakhstan.

The ceremony took place on November 24 in Mangistau Oblast at Cape Skalisti border guard observation post. The ceremony was led by the newly appointed US Ambassador John Ordway, who presented 11 modular complexes and related equipment to the Border Service of Kazakhstan.

“The modular shelter complexes will assist the Border Guard Service in extending their presence along previously unmanned sections of the border in Mangistau Oblast,” the U.S. Embassy said.

The funding was donated by the government of the UK and allowed the US Export Control and related Border Security (EXBS) program “to continue its ongoing capacity-building efforts with the Border Guards aimed at detecting and deterring illicit trafficking across the international borders” of Kazakhstan.

The Kazakh Border Service had already received $27 million in assistance from the EXBS program that was established by the US Department of State in 2001. The program aims to help Kazakhstan strengthen its strategic trade control system and put in place “sustainable capabilities for border security agencies to interdict, investigate, and prosecute the illicit transfers of weapons of mass destruction (WMD), WMD-related materials, and advanced conventional arms”.
